Like some frenetic piece of avant-garde cinema recast purely as sound, ‘Audiogenic Events’ (2004) makes its form from discrete excerpts of diverse electronic textures and shapes. Whirling the listener through a jump-cut fantasia of everything from organ and choral allusions to bubbling synthetic polyphony and violent electrical jerks and spasms, the effect both unsettles and draws one more deeply into an anti-logic all its own. No sooner than the listener locates themselves in one spatial environment, ruled by its own forms and timbres, they are spliced into the next, operating on an entirely new set of criteria. At times the piece sees Kayn unloosing some of his most vivid and unique material – tantalising glimpses of new musical worlds wholly unvisited but for these fleeting moments.
