Many composers have attempted to compose a music that reveals itself primarily in texture, from the impressionism of Debussy to the way Schoenberg’s klangfarbenmelodie later informed the systematisation of timbre in the work of Stockhausen and others. There are few counterparts, however, to Kayn’s approach to this problem, brought to a level of near-obsessive abandon in works such as ‘Sonority ERT’. From the clangorous depths of an atonal industrial assault to the dreamy sun-dazed blur of its closing minutes, here we hear texture as readily malleable musical resource – a sonic meditation.
