As strong as Kayn’s passion for the often tempestuous, pseudo-algorithmic selections of his machines, was his evident fondness for a sound world redolent of unfolding pastoral beauty. Perhaps this is the dividing line, after all, between composer and sound artist. ‘The Art of Sound’ highlights this ambiguity in more than its title alone, for however alien the sound sources, its effect – like Beethoven’s 6th – is “more the expression of feeling than painting”.
